She tries to read the “poetry of witness” in the “social space” where the distinction between the political and personal vanishes. ![]() The Paper will attempt to read Ali’s poetry as the “poetry of witness.” “Poetry of Witness” is a term coined by Carolyn Forche wherein she tries to dismantle the difference between the “personal” and the “political”, where the former is emotional and lyrical, and the latter is somewhat committed and factual. His canvas of writing covers all human emotions, feelings and sufferings he is voice to the voiceless, witness to myriad sufferings at home and abroad: the holocaust of the native Americans, the limitless sufferings of the people of Kashmir violence of the partition of India and its aftermath, violence in South America and Sarajevo decline of Urdu language, life in diaspora and pangs of exile. He remains an unparalleled master of Ghazal tradition in English. The universality of his poetry is acknowledged everywhere, be it his homeland Kashmir, India or the West. His poetry embodies the pain of human suffering across the world. He is a witness, a beloved and a martyr at the same time.
